James is a warm and reflective psychologist who values genuine therapeutic relationships grounded in collaboration, curiosity and respect. He recognises that each person’s experiences are unique and aims to support clients in developing greater self-understanding and meaningful change in their lives.

Approach

James takes a person-centred and trauma-informed approach to therapy, integrating evidence-based psychological practice with an awareness of the relational, social and systemic factors that can influence mental health and wellbeing. He recognises that emotional distress and behavioural patterns often emerge as ways of coping or surviving in response to life experiences and circumstances. James works collaboratively with clients to build insight and develop new ways of relating to themselves, their emotions and their relationships. He values authenticity within the therapeutic process and aims to create an environment where clients feel understood, supported, and able to move toward the changes that matter to them.

Experience and Interests

James has experience working across both public and private settings with adolescents and adults presenting with a broad range of concerns, including anxiety disorders, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties, substance use concerns, emotional dysregulation and neurodivergence. He is also able to incorporate structured Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) when supporting clients experiencing sleep-related difficulties. As a cisgender gay man, James is passionate about understanding the impact of intersecting identities, stigma and belonging on mental health and wellbeing. He has insight into LGBTQIA+ experiences and is committed to providing an inclusive and affirming therapeutic environment for people from all backgrounds and life experiences.

Therapies

James primarily works from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework and integrates elements of Schema Therapy (ST), Schema Mode Therapy (SMT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), depending on each client’s needs and goals. His therapeutic work is grounded in evidence-based practice while remaining flexible and tailored to the individual.

How is James Described by His Clients?

Clients often describe James as thoughtful, calm and easy to talk to. They appreciate his reflective style and the sense of warmth and authenticity he brings to therapy.

James Personally
