Pronouns: He/Him
James is a warm and collaborative psychologist who aims to meet clients where they’re at and understand how things look from their perspective. He strives to foster an environment of curiosity, non-judgement and open authenticity.
Approach
James aims to build a picture with his client of what has worked and what has not, what has shaped them into who they are, and where they would like to go from here. James takes the view that change rarely moves in a straight line, and understands that people often arrive already being hard on themselves about it. As therapy progresses, he seeks to help his clients test these understandings against new experiences and challenges, reflecting on what fits and what does not, and refining the picture as they go.
He aims to help his clients find real relief from what they are struggling with, and to feel more equipped for what comes next. James also values feedback on how his clients feel therapy is going, and works to make sure it is getting results. More than anything, James hopes his clients come away feeling genuinely heard, with a clearer sense of what matters to them and how to move towards a more balanced, fulfilling life.
Experience and Interests
James has experience working with adults experiencing a range of difficulties including substance use, anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, trauma, grief and loss, anger, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties. He also has experience with neurodivergent clients.
He has previously worked in various settings including community mental health, an inpatient psychiatric unit, forensic alcohol and other drug treatment with men, and telephone crisis support, with people from a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances.
His areas of interest include alcohol and other drug concerns and how these sit alongside other difficulties in life, and longstanding patterns in how people manage emotions and relate to others. He also has specific experience working with men who have struggled to seek support previously.
Therapies
James draws on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and incorporates aspects of motivational interviewing (MI) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), employing evidence-based practice to suit each client’s needs.
