So, what is an eating disorder?

An eating disorder is a broad term for a category of psychological disorders characterised by an unhealthy attitude towards food, which includes abnormal eating habits accompanied by irrational thoughts and emotions towards food. The four most common eating disorders are;

  • Anorexia nervosa – people with anorexia tend to eat too little, exercise excessively and may actively go to effort to rid themselves of food consumed. They may binge, but overall their weight remains low and unhealthy.
  • Bulimia – people with bulimia tend to actively attempt to lose weight and gain control of their eating, however, they will experience episodes of binging (eating too much food in a short period of time), which is followed by deliberate attempts to rid themselves of food consumed – for example, using laxatives, self-induced vomiting or exercising excessively.
  • Binge eating disorder (BED) – reoccurring episodes of binging, typically followed by feelings of shame and guilt. People with BED often attempt to diet or live by certain food rules.
  • Other specified feeding disorder (OSFED) – showing disturbed eating habits that cannot be explained by the criteria of the other eating disorders. Patients may show symptoms of a range of eating disorders.

Eating disorders can affect anyone, but most sufferers tend to be young women. Read More
